NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 8, 2013) – Junior midfielder Danny Leon Jr. (Flushing, N.Y.) scored the game-winner less than a minute into overtime to send the Mercy College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon.

Mercy improves to 2-0 with its second straight shutout while SCSU drops to 0-1.

Although the Mavericks put the first shot on frame, the Owls took control early as they forced senior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) to make four saves in a 15-minute span.  Mercy fought back throughout the second half and nearly managed to break through late in regulation, forcing three saves in the final five minutes, but the Owls defense held firm to force overtime.

It did not take Mercy long to find the back of the net, however, as senior forward Ransmond Aboagye (Bronx, N.Y.) cracked a shot that rebounded to Leon, who pounced on the ball in the box to fire the game-winner home in the 91st minute.

Leon seemed destined to score, as he put three of his team-leading five shots on target, while Aboagye put just as much pressure on the defense with five shots of his own.  Papas made six saves to preserve his two-match shutout streak to start the season.

Freshman forward Kevin Joslyn (Norwalk, Conn.) was a bit unlucky not to score, having put three of his five shots on net as well, while junior goalkeeper Stephen Sasso (Orange, Conn.) managed five saves in regulation.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 as they host Stonehill College (1-1) at 4 p.m.
