Men's Basketball's Smith Notches Eighth Double Figure Game at LIU Post

BROOKEVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2014) – Senior LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) poured in 16 points for his eighth double-digit scoring game as the Mercy College men's basketball team faced East Coast Conference rival LIU Post on Wednesday night.

The Pioneers defended their home court to the tune of a 95-63 victory, improving to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the ECC while Mercy drops to 1-13 (1-7).

It was a back-and-forth affair early on as Mercy went up by four points at 11-7 with 15:39 on the clock, but LIU Post quickly turned the tables, scoring 10 unanswered points over the next five minutes.

The Pioneers soon stretched their lead out to 10 behind another eight straight points and extended it to as many as 11 at 31-20 with 5:09 left in the first half.  The Mavericks managed to cut into the margin on a 10-2 run that made it a three-point affair at 33-30 with 2:48 remaining and got as close as two points at the two-minute mark, but LIU Post would take a five-point lead into halftime.

Mercy trimmed the deficit back to three points two minutes into the second half, but LIU Post took control from there, rattling off a 25-2 run to take a commanding 70-44 lead with 11:16 on the clock.  The Pioneers led by as many as 36 before Mavericks freshman Jerry Crismond (Somerdale, N.J. / Sterling) scored the final four points of the game to bring the score to its final of 95-63.

Bailey's 16 points came on 7-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.  Senior Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y. / St. Mary's) just missed his fifth double-double of the season with nine points and 10 rebounds, while senior Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y. / St. Mary's) and sophomore Nate Stitchell (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) each dished out four assists.  Freshman Chris Cavalieri (Holbrook, N.Y. / St. Thomas More) chipped in his first three collegiate points, going 3-of-4 from the line, and pulled down two rebounds in just five minutes.

Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks will host NYIT (6-7, 4-3) in another ECC matchup on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2:30 p.m.
