Walters Continues Torrid Pace as Men's Basketball Faces ECC Rival STAC
Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2014) – Senior P.J. Walters (Hempstead, N.Y. / Wheaton College) continued his torrid spring semester with his sixth double-digit scoring game in the last eight as the Mercy College men's basketball team took on East Coast Conference rival St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday night.
Walters finished with 12 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field (2-2 from beyond the arc), bringing his scoring average up to 11.6 points per game over the spring semester. Sophomore Daniel Pierrot (New York, N.Y. / Adelphi University) led the Mavericks with 13 points off the bench while fellow substitute junior Terrance Murchie (Franklin Square, N.Y. / H. Frank Carey) poured in 12. Senior Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y. / St. Mary's) dished out five assists and made two steals as senior Olajide Keshinro (Brooklyn, N.Y. / SUNY Cobleskill) grabbed eight rebounds and blocked one shot.
Mercy's record is now 1-17 overall and 1-11 in the ECC while STAC moves above .500 at 9-8 (5-6).
STAC scored the first six points of the game in the opening 1:13 and went up by as many as 14 points at the 14:43 mark before Mercy began to chip away at the deficit. An 11-point outburst immediately cut the margin to three at 17-14 with 10:05 left in the half.
The Spartans regained a seven-point edge four minutes later, but the Mavericks went on an 8-2 run to close out the half, going into the break down just one at 31-30.
The second half began with another quick start for STAC as the Spartans scored five points in the opening two minutes and soon extended the margin to 15 at 47-32 with 13:13 remaining. They would hold on for the 67-54 victory.
Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks will host the University of the District of Columbia (3-12, 1-18) on Thursday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m.
