Gatti Scores as Men's Soccer Faces NYIT

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2014)- Junior Juan Gatti (New Rochelle, N.Y. / Monroe CC)  scored off an assist from senior Mubarak Sani (Bronx, N.Y. / Borough of Manhattan CC) in the 22nd minute, as the Mercy College men's soccer team faced the Bears of NYIT on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears improve to 9-1-1 overall, and 5-0-1 in the ECC, while the Mavericks fall to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in the ECC.

Mercy took an early 1-0 lead, as Sani played a long thru ball to Gatti on the left side. Gatti went one-on-one with the Bears goalkeeper Jonathan Rico. Gatti pulled Rico in close and then flipped the ball over his head for the score.

The Mavericks maintained a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, NYIT would even the game up at 1-1 on an Ivan Rico penalty kick in the 58th minute.

The Bears would score the game-winner in the 64 minute, as Ben Wilson connected on a shot from 25 yards out.

For Mercy, sophomore Luis Lizarzaburu (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) played all 90 minutes and made four saves.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday Oct. 18, as they travel across the Hudson to face the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3:00 p.m.
