DeLeon Totals Eight Points and Nets Hat-Trick, as No.14 Women's Soccer Dominates NYIT, 5-0
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2014)- Junior Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) netted a hat-trick and made two assists, which totaled eight points on the afternoon, as the No. 14 Mercy College women's soccer team dominated the Bears of NYIT, 5-0.
The Mavericks improve to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the East Coast Conference, while the Bears fall to 2-8-2 overall, and 0-5-1 in the ECC.
The Mavericks didn't find the back of the net until the 28th minute, when freshman Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) made a short pass into the box, and DeLeon fired Mercy to a 1-0 lead.
This would prove to be the only scoring of the first half, as the Mavericks held a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Mercy broke the game wide open.
Mercy took a 2-0 lead just three minutes in, as senior Jessica Carrillo (San Diego, Calif. / Miramar College) came up the right side and played a cross to DeLeon. DeLeon would punch the ball in and the rout was on.
Mercy increased their lead to 3-0 in the 60th minute, as senior Jenna Patel (Cypress, Calif. / Santiago Canyon College) received a pass from DeLeon off a corner kick. Patel took a very high arcing shot towards the goal, which sailed over the goalkeeper's head, hit the right post and bounced in for the score.
In the 74th minute, DeLeon returned the favor to Carrillo, as she assisted on Carrillo's goal to give Mercy a 4-0 advantage.
DeLeon would complete the hat-trick in the 79th minute, as she scored an unassisted goal to increase the Mavericks lead to 5-0.
For Mercy, DeLeon scored three goals on only five shots attempted, while Carrillo and fellow senior Danielle Deeb (San Diego, Calif. /Miramar College) both took four shots. Junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./ Kingston) made one save in 78:17 minutes of work, while freshman Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz. / Millennium) made her home debut, playing the final 11:43.
Head Jonathan Feinstein and the No. 14 Mavericks return to action on Saturday Oct. 18, as they travel across the Hudson to face Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College at 12:00 pm.
