Sani Scores as Men's Soccer Faces ECC Foe STAC
Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2014)- Senior Mubarak Sani (Bronx, N.Y. / Borough of Manhattan CC) scored late in the second half, as the Mercy College men's soccer team faced the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans improve to 6-5-2 overall and 3-5-0 in the East Coast Conference with the 2-1 victory, while the Mavericks fall to 3-11 overall, and 2-5 in the ECC.
STAC scored two unanswered goals in the span of a minute to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
The Mavericks attempted to make a late rally, as Sani nailed a shot from the top of the box to cut the Spartans lead to 2-1, in the 76th minute. Senior Jonathan Garcia (Falls Church, Va. / ASA College) attempted to tie the game up, as he ripped a shot from 30 yards out that pulled wide right.
For Mercy, Junior Christian Diaz (Watsonville, Calif. / Univ. of Vermont) took five shots, including two on goal, while senior Danny Leon Jr. (Flushing, N.Y. / Benjamin Cardozo) took two shots. Luis Lizarzaburu (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) made six saves in 90 minutes of work.
Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday Oct. 25, as they host the Pioneers of LIU Post University at 3:00 p.m.
