Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2014)- A goal in each half helped the No. 14 Mercy College women's soccer team defeat the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks improve to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in the East Coast Conference, while the Spartans fall to 6-4-2, and 2-4-1 in the ECC.
The Mavericks made the trip across the pond to face STAC in a high noon showdown on Saturday, before they embark on the biggest week of the season against Philadelphia University, and LIU Post University.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, as senior Jessica Carrillo (San Diego, Calif. / Miramar College) scored off a rebound from the Spartans' goalkeeper Amanda Volpe. Volpe made a save on a free kick taken by senior Danielle Deeb (San Diego, Calif. / Miramar College). Carrillo was in front of the net and tipped it past the keeper for the score.
The Mavericks seemed to back off a little bit, as Mercy only got off one shot in the remaining 25 minutes and held a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Volpe and junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston) played huge roles in keeping the game at 1-0, as both goalkeepers made diving saves. Volpe dived on top of the ball to stop almost sure goals by Carrillo and Deeb.
Mercy would finally find the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Junior Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz. / Paradise Valley CC) took the ball off a throw-in by senior Jenna Petel (Cypress, Calif. / Santiago Canyon College). DeLeon went one-on-one with a STAC defender and took the ball into the box.
As she entered the box, she played a cross to senior MacKenzie Cochrane (Mission Viejo, Calif. / Fresno State University) who was running up the right side. Cochrane took DeLeon's pass, and put it in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Mercy kept attacking as back-to-back shots by junior Ashley Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz. / Paradise Valley CC) sailed wide right. Augustine made key saves late to preserve the shutout of the Mavericks.
Augustine made four saves and picked up her seventh shutout of the season.
Mercy tied the program high for wins in a season with today's victory. The current record of 13, was set by last years team.
