White Posts Near Double-Double as Volleyball Faces Bloomfield
Box Score BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2014) – Senior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) posted a near double-double, finishing with a team-high eight kills and 14 digs, as the Mercy College volleyball team faced Bloomfield College on Tuesday night at the Bloomfield Gym.
The Bears improve to 11-10 on the season, while the Mavericks fall to 4-18.
The opening set saw Mercy jump out to an 11-10 lead, using a pair of kills from White and a kill from both junior Abi Foti (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) and freshman Destinee Simpson (Westhampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) to build the early lead, before Bloomfield scored seven unanswered to take back the lead for good at 17-12 and take a 1-0 advantage over the Mavericks.
Mercy came right back in the second set and gave the Bears all they could handle as they built a 20-19 lead late in the set helped by 12 kills in the frame with White contributing four of her eight kills. Bloomfield stormed back with a 4-0 run to take a 23-20 lead, but the Mavericks would not go down easily as they came within a point at 24-23 before succumbing on a service error.
The Bears scored ten points in a row following a 10-10 tie to take a 20-10 lead and would not look back in securing the victory.
For Mercy, Simpson concluded the night with six kills and three block assists, while both freshman Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and senior Sonia Morales (San Fernando, Calif./Discovery Prep (L.A. Mission College) added five kills with Johnson digging up four balls and Morales hitting an efficient .333 on the evening.
Also contributing for Mercy was sophomore Floriana Rraci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) who had a strong outing for the Mavericks, compiling 13 digs and four assists, while sophomore Michelle Luna (Costa Mesa, Calif./Costa Mesa) led the team with 11 assists.
Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks return to action on Thursday, October 23rd as they will take on the University of New Haven in a road non-conference match at 7 p.m.
