No. 13 Women's Soccer Faces LIU Post on Senior Day
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2014) - Junior Jessica DeLeon (Pheonix, Ariz. /Paradise Valley CC) and senior Jessica Carrillo (San Diego, Calif./ Miramar College) took four and three shots respectively, as the No. 13 Mercy College women's soccer team faced the Pioneers of LIU Post on senior day.
The Pioneers improve to 12-1-1 overall, and 6-0-1 in the East Coast Conference, while the Mavericks fall to 14-2 overall, and 7-1 in the ECC.
A beautiful late October afternoon, set the stage for heavyweight showdown between the top two teams in the ECC.
The first half proved to be a chess match between Mavericks Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Pioneers' Mark Dawson. LIU Post took three shot in the first 15 minutes, and got a scare from Pioneers forward Susanne Vistnes who ripped a shot which pulled just wide of the goal.
The game remained scoreless at the half with both teams attempting five shots each.
In second half, the chess match continued as both Mercy and LIU Post had one shot taken before the clock entered the 67th minute. During that time, Post would break the tied as Vistnes played a cross toward the Mercy goal. The ball bounced off the far post and Lauren Bellone tapped in it for the score.
The Mavericks had opportunities to score late, but couldn't capitalized on the multiple corners taken in the final 10 minutes.
For Mercy, junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./ Kingston) made one save in 90 minutes of work.
The Mavericks will close out the 2014 season on Saturday Nov. 1, as they travel to Flushing, N.Y. to take on the Knights of Queens College at 12:00 p.m.
