Zorn Scores as Field Hockey Closes Out Trip to Show Me State
Box Score ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Oct. 26, 2014) - Sophomore Randi Zorn (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) scored the first goal of the afternoon, as the Mercy College field hockey team faced the Lions of Lindenwood University in the finale of the teams' trip to the Midwest.
The Lions improve to 9-5 with the 5-1 victory, while the Mavericks fall to 1-13.
After visiting the Gateway to the West in St. Louis, the field hockey team crossed back over the Missouri river to take on the host Lindenwood Lions on Sunday.
The afternoon got off to a good start, as sophomore Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif. /Cupertino) connected on her second assist of the weekend. Ballin assisted on Zorn's goal to take an early 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived as the Lions' Greta Banholzer scored off an Ashton Lichvar assist to tie the game up at 1-1.
Freshman Olivia Kelly (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) made two critical saves late to keep the game deadlocked, 1-1, at halftime.
In the second half, the Lions would score four unanswered goals to put the game out of reach of the Mavericks.
For Mercy, Ballin and senior Kristine Carl (Kingston, N.Y. /Kingston) both took two shots, while Kelly made seven saves in 70 minutes of work.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday Oct. 29, as they will travel to Madison, N.J. to take on the Rangers of Drew University at 4:00 p.m.
