White Notches 15th Double-Double as Volleyball Takes on Dowling

OAKDALE, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2014) – Senior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) notched her 15th double-double of the season with a match-high 17 kills along with a team-high 16 digs, as the Mercy College volleyball team faced Dowling College in an East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup on Tuesday evening at the Dowling Gymnasium.

The Golden Lions improve to 17-8 overall and 11-3 in conference play, while the Mavericks are now 5-22 and 1-12 in ECC action.

White came into the match ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in kills and made her prescence known with six kills in the first set. The senior now has recorded double-digit kills in 25 of the Mavericks 27 matches on the year.

Mercy came out of the gate on fire, taking an early 5-2 advantage in the first set as they received kills from junior Abi Foti (Bedford, N.H./Bedford), White and freshman Destinee Simpson (Westhampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional). They carried a 19-18 advantage before the hosts rattled off three straight points to take their first lead of the match at 21-19. The two teams traded points before Dowling scored two unanswered to turn a 26-26 tie into a 28-26 set win and a 1-0 advantage.

The second set saw Mercy once again jump out to an early lead at 7-6, but the Golden Lions turned up their intensity and took the lead with three unanswered to build a 9-7 lead. The Mavericks got within a point, 12-11, midway through the set before Dowling tallied eight in a row to build a 20-11 lead and would not look back in taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

For the first time in the match the home team jumped out to the early lead, but they were not able to shake off Mercy until going on a 6-0 run to build a 24-15 after the Mavericks had gotten within three at 18-15.

Simpson ended the evening with five kills and three digs, while senior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz./Seton Catholic Prep) added 24 assists to the Mercy cause.  Sophomore Niccole Soriano (Elizabeth, N.J./Thomas A. Edison) added 15 digs and Foti finished with four kills. Sophomore Floriana Rraci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) aided the Mavericks on the defensive side with seven digs.
