Three First Half Goals Pushes Men's Soccer Passed Daemen, 3-0
Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2014)- The Mercy College men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals in the first half to cruise to a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats of Daemen College on Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks improve to 2-7 overall, and 2-1 in the East Coast Conference, while the Wildcats fall to 3-5 overall, and 0-3 in the ECC.
Head Coach Chris Smith was looking for no let downs in this game, and his players didn't disappoint. Senior Roberto Dashi (Nyack, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) got the Mavericks on the board first in the 13th minute on a shot to the lower left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Mercy kept their foot on the gas, as fellow senior Jonathan Garcia (Falls Church, Va. / ASA College) put the Mavericks up 2-0 in the 29th minute, on a shot from 35 yards out which ended up pulling the goalkeeper out of the box.
The Mavericks third and final goal of the first half came by way of a penalty kick for senior Danny Leon Jr. (Flushing, N.Y. / Benjamin Cardozo). Leon Jr. nailed the penalty kick to take a 3-0 lead into the half.
Mercy would cool down in the second half, as no more scoring took place.
Mercy outshot Daemen 21-7, and took 10 corner kicks to just one for Daemen. Sophomore Luis Lizarzaburu (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) made two saves, and earned the shutout victory in 90 minutes of work.
The Mavericks return to action on Sunday Oct. 5, as they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College at 3:30 p.m.
