Cochrane Scores Game-Winner as No. 25 Women's Soccer Defeats Daemen, 2-0
Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2014) - Senior MacKenzie Cochrane (Mission Viejo, Calif. /Fresno State University) scored the game-winner in the 5th minute, as the No. 25 Mercy College women's soccer team defeated the Wildcats of Daemen College, 2-0, on Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks improve to 8-1 overall, and remain undefeated in the East Coast Conference at 3-0, while the Wildcats fall to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the ECC.
Mercy drove up a day early, so they could be well rested and ready to take on the Wildcats on Friday afternoon.
The great nights sleep really made the difference, as Cochrane scored just five minutes into the game on a hard, low shot inside the far post from the right wing to take an early 1-0 lead.
Mercy almost extended their lead to 2-0 instantly, as senior Jessica Carrillo (San Diego, Calif. / Miramar College) fired a header towards the Daemen goal. Kathryn Haessner was able to get her hands on the ball and make the save.
Haessner stopped Mercy again just before the half, as shots by senior Abby Zielinski (Lancaster, Pa. / George Mason Univ.) and junior Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz. / Paradise Valley CC), were stopped by Haessner.
Mercy held a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Mercy continued to attack Haessner and the Wildcats' backline. DeLeon and junior Ashley Johnson ((Phoenix, Ariz. / Paradise Valley CC) had both shots sent back by Haessner.
The Mavericks finally found the back of the net in the 80th minute, as junior Amanda McLean (Phoenix, Ariz. /Paradise Valley CC) played a cross into the middle of the box. DeLeon made a cut towards the goal and headed a high ball just under the crossbar for the goal.
For Mercy, the Mavericks outshot the Wildcats 16-5, including 12-2 in shots on goal. Junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) made two saves, notched her 13th career shutout, and fourth of the 2014 season.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to action on Sunday Oct. 5, as they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College at 1:00 p.m.
