Sani Scores Game-Winner as Men's Soccer Defeats Nyack, 3-1

NYACK, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2014) – Senior Mubarak Sani (Bronx, N.Y. / Borough of Manhattan CC) scored twice, including the game-winner, as the Mercy College men's soccer team defeated the Warriors of Nyack College, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mavericks improve to 3-8, while the Warriors remain winless at 0-10-1.

Mercy started fast, as senior Jonathan Garcia (Falls Church, Va. /ASA College) connected with Sani in the 4th minute for a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors evened the game at 1-1, as Maximillian Schmitt scored on an Artur Piperkov assist in the 19th minute.

The game remained tied at 1-1.

In the second half, junior Juan Gatti (New Rochelle, N.Y. / Monroe CC) took over. Gatti assisted on Sani's game-winner in the 59th minute, and assisted on an insurance goal by senior Andrew Levy (Bayside, N.Y. /Berkeley College) in the 88th minute.

For Mercy, sophomore Luis Lizarzaburu (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) made three saves in 90 minutes of work.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday Oct. 11, as they will host the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia at 3:00 p.m.
