No. 20 Women's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Tie against Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2014)- Heavy rain fall and unplayable field conditions suspended the final 15 minutes of the No. 20 Mercy College women's soccer game against Queens College this afternoon. The suspended game will result in a 0-0 draw.

The Mavericks finish the regular season at 14-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the East Coast Conference, while the Knights finish the season at 4-8-5 overall, and 2-5-2 in the ECC.

Puddles' and mud dominated the natural grass field at Queens College. The Mavericks had opportunities to score, but senior Jessica Carrillo (San Diego, Calif. /Miramar College) speed was neutralized by the playing conditions. Mercy dodged a bullet, as a Knights goal was nullified due to a foul committed on junior goalkeeper Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. /Kingston).  

The game remained scoreless at the intermission, with the Knights outshooting the Mavericks 4-2 in the first half.

In the second half, mud continued to dirty the all-white jerseys for Queens. The Knights Haley Gibbons had her jersey number almost covered after a taking a spill in one of the massive mud pits on the Queens field.

In the 75th minute, with mud covering the Mavericks players' and a small lake forming in front of the Mercy bench, Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein asked for the game to be called on the grounds of unplayable field conditions and the safety of his players.

Feinstein and Knights' Head Coach Carl Christian met with the referees at midfield to discuss the playing surface. After a brief meeting, the referees decided to call the game at 0-0.

The Mavericks will finish second in the standings, and receive a home game in the ECC championship semifinals against the Golden Lions of Dowling College on Wednesday Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
