Three Score as Field Hockey Hosts Dowling
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2014) – Sophomores Vanessa Soler (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North), Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) and Randi Zorn (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) all recorded goals as the Mercy College field hockey team scored a season-high three goals in their matchup with Dowling College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Golden Lions improve to 3-12, while the Mavericks are now 1-15.
Dowling jumped out to an early 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest, but they nor Mercy could find the back of the net in the remaining 32 minutes of the half. The visitors would head into the intermission up 1-0 despite the Mavericks maintaining possession in the Golden Lions side of the field for most of the half and outshooting Dowling 9-2.
The second half saw the floodgates open as the two teams combined to score six goals in the period. Mercy started off the scoring with a goal in the 38th minute by Soler, who took a pass from senior Kristine Carl (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) following a Ballin penalty corner, and fired it past the goalkeeper to tie the score up at 1-1.
Ballin got on the board herself in the 43rd minute with a goal off a shot by Soler that she deflected into the net, giving the Mavericks their first lead of the day at 2-1.
The lead was short lived as Dowling came back and scored two goals in a span of less than a minute to take back the lead at 3-2.
The Golden Lions added on another goal in the 51st minute to make it 4-2, but Mercy would not go down without a fight as Zorn would put one past the goalkeeper in the 67th minute off a deflection from a shot taken by freshman Kimberly Sands (Bethel, Conn./Immaculate) to make it 4-3.
The Mavericks continued to apply pressure to the Dowling defense, trying to find the equalizer, but time ran out and the Golden Lions escaped with a narrow 4-3 victory.
Mercy held a 21-15 edge in shots on the day and took 16 penalty corners compared to five for Dowling.
Freshman Geraldine Grandprez (Wanze, Belgium/Saint Quirin (IHECS Bruxelles) led the Mavericks with seven shots on the afternoon, while Soler, Ballin and senior Giana Magosin (Pleasantville, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) each produced three shots.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks return to action next Saturday, November 8th for Senior Day against Bellarmine at 1 p.m.
