Roberts Posts Third Straight Double-Double as Women's Basketball Faces Chestnut Hill
Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Nov. 20, 2014)- Senior Brandone Roberts (Jessup, Md. / Nyack College) posted her third straight double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, as the Mercy College women's basketball team faced the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College on Thursday evening.
The Griffins improve to 1-3 with the 67-49 victory, while the Mavericks fall to 3-1.
Griffins guard Nina Mazzarelli started extremely hot from downtown. She scored the first seven points for Chestnut Hill, which put Mercy into a 12-5 deficit just three minutes in. Mercy struggled to score, as the Griffins held the Mavericks at arm length, despite baskets from junior Tatiana Parish (Los Angeles, Calif. /Mt. San Antonio CC) and freshman Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Midwood).
Nicole Parriski scored out of a timeout of taken by Mercy, to push the Griffins lead to 30-17 with 7:19 left. Mercy responded by putting together an 8-0 run, that cut the Chestnut Hill lead to 30-27 with four minutes to play in the half.
The Griffins answered right back with a 6-0 run to end the half at 36-27.
In the second half, a layup by junior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y. / SUNYIT) put Mercy on the board, but the Mavericks had little answer for the strong guard play and hot shooting, as Chestnut Hill rolled to the victory.
For Mercy, Parish finished with 10 points, three assists and three steals, while Goodson fell just short of double-double with eight and nine rebounds, while adding four blocks. Freshman Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) played 14 minutes off the bench, scoring four points, grabbing four rebounds and had two assists.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22, as they will host the Wildcats of Wilmington University at 4:00 p.m.
