50 Point Second Half Propels Women's Basketball to 85-59 victory over Nyack

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2014)- The Mercy College women's basketball team posted a 50 point second half to run away with a 85-59 victory over the Warriors of Nyack College on Monday evening.

The Mavericks improve to 5-1 overall, while the Warriors fall to 1-5 overall.

Junior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y. / SUNYIT) went 2-for-2 to start the game, as the Mavericks took an early 6-0 lead at the 18:14 mark.

The Warriors fought back into the game with an 8-4 run that give Nyack its first lead of the game at 11-10 with 12:37 left.

Freshman Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn. / Saint Bernard) attempted to open the game up as she connected on three 3-pointers to hold a 26-23 lead with 04:44 to play.

The Warriors' Janay Trueitt nailed a triple to tie the game up at 26, on the very next trip down the floor.

Freshman Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) went to work on the low block, as she made a lay-up with 01:15 left that capped off a 7-0 run. Mercy led 33-26.

Nyack was able to get to the free throw line to cut the lead to three at 35-32, as the first half came to a close.

In the second half, a 18-5 run in the first five minutes broke the game wide open, as Mercy took a 53-37 lead.

The lead stretched to 20 as junior Tatiana Parish (Los Angeles, Calif. /Mt. San Antonio CC) found fellow classmate Erin Copeland (Kansas City, Kan. / Univ. of Illinois-Springfield) in the corner for a wide open triple.

Copeland returned the favor to Parish, as she assisted on her triple that ballooned the Mavericks lead to 62-40 with 11 minutes to play.

Despite the Warriors' Jessica Logemann and Kelli Smoot connecting from downtown, the Mavericks made their free throws down the stretch and a got spark from freshman Miranda Santiago (Yonkers, N.Y. / Yonkers) in the final five minutes to preserve the win.

For Mercy, senior Tanayzha Augustine (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Poughkeepsie) led four starters in double figures with 15 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Copeland finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

The Mavericks shot 54.4% from the field and 60% from behind the arc. Parish scored 11 points off the bench, including making three triples, while Sullivan nailed four triples en-route to 12 points.

Clark finished with a career-high five points and six rebounds, while Santiago also had a career-high with six points.

Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks return to action on Thursday Dec. 4, as they host the Knights of Berkeley College at 5:30 p.m.
