Parish Nails Five Three-Pointers as Women's Basketball Faces Dowling in ECC Opener
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2014) Junior Tatiana Parish (Los Angeles, Calif. / Mt. San Antonio CC) finished with 17 points and went 5-for-6 from behind the arc, as the Mercy College women's basketball team faced the Golden Lions of Dowling College in their East Coast Conference opener.
The Golden Lions improve to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the ECC with the 71-65 victory, while the Mavericks fall to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the ECC.
Mercy opened the game on a 15-2 run, which was capped off by a rainbow three-pointer as the shot clock expired, and a floater by Parish.
Parish continued her strong play as she assisted on a lay-up for senior Brandone Roberts (Jessup, Md. / Nyack College) and connected on her second triple of the half to take a 20-11 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
The Golden Lions roared back into the game behind Nicole Caggiano, who nailed two triples to trail by three with just over three minutes to play.
Mercy closed the half with a 7-0 run to take a 10-point lead into halftime. Parish led all scorers with 14 points, as she went a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-4 from behind the three-point line.
In the second half, Dowling erased the halftime deficit by going on a 10-3 run in the first three minutes to pull the game to within three at 44-41.
Momentum swung in favor of the Golden Lions, as Dowling climbed back into the game and took their first lead during a 16-7 run over the next nine and half minutes.
The Mavericks had one last surge late, as Parish banked in a three to cut the Golden Lions' lead to 64-61 with just under two minutes to play. Mercy and Dowling traded free-throws in the final few minutes of the game and the Golden Lions sank their free throws down the stretch to capture their first win in 2014-15 season.
For Mercy, Roberts finished with 17 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks, while senior Tanayzha Augustine (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. /Poughkeepsie) finished 12 points and 10 rebounds. Goodson had eight points and 11 rebounds, while junior Erin Copeland (Kansas City, Kan. / Univ. of Illinois-Springfield) finished with nine assists and four steals.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday Dec. 13, as they travel to Bridgeport, Conn. to face the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport in ECC action at 1:00 p.m.
