Augustine Posts Near Double-Double as Women's Basketball Travels to Queens
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 20, 2014)- Senior Tanayzha Augustine (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./ Poughkeepsie) scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Mercy College women's basketball team fell to the Knights of Queens College, 73-63 in East Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights improve to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the ECC, while the Mavericks fall to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in the ECC.
The Knights jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, before senior Brandone Roberts (Jessup, Md. /Nyack College) cut the lead to three on back-to-back baskets.
Juniors Tatiana Parish (Los Angeles, Calif. / Mt. San Antonio CC) and Erin Copeland (Kansas City, Kan./ Univ. of IllInois-Springfield) connected on triples to keep the game within reach at 13-12 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Queens responded by putting together a 22-8 run in the final 10 minutes, which included a 16-0 run that saw Madison Rowland score all 10 of her first half points to give the Knights a 35-20 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Mavericks had no answer for Rowland, as she scored 15 of her 25 points in the second stanza. Augustine had her best half of the season scoring 15 points and grabbing eight boards in an attempt to will Mercy back into the contest.
Parish scored eight of her final 11 points in the second half, while Copeland finish with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Despite losing, the Mavericks outrebounded the Knights, 46-45 and went 16-for-22 for 72.7% from the free-throw line.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will take a two week break for the holiday and open 2015, hosting the Pioneers of LIU Post University on Wednesday Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
