Keshinro, Bailey Post Ninth, Sixth Double-Doubles at ECC Foe NYIT

(Feb. 22, 2014) – Seniors Olajide Keshinro (Brooklyn, N.Y. / SUNY Cobleskill) and Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y. / St. Mary's) recorded their ninth and sixth double-doubles of the season, respectively, as the Mercy College men's basketball team played its final road game of the season at East Coast Conference foe NYIT on Saturday afternoon.
What was a tight game early on ultimately became an 89-79victory for the host Bears, who improve to 10-14 overall and 8-10 in the ECC while the Mavericks stand at 2-23 (2-17).
Keshinro got Mercy started with an offensive putback on the opening possession, but NYIT immediately took the lead and never surrendered it, going up 9-2 by the 17:18 mark. Mercy cut the deficit to two at 22-20 on a steal and fastbreak layup by senior P.J. Walters (Hempstead, N.Y. / Wheaton College) with 10:10 remaining in the first half but would come no closer.
Keshinro had a double-double by halftime and went on to finish with 19 points on 8-of-11 from the field, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Bailey notched 14 points (7-of-13 from the field) and 10 rebounds along with two blocks, two assists and one steal. Walters, sophomore Daniel Pierrot (New York, N.Y. / Adelphi Univ.) and senior Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y. / St. Mary's) all scored in double figures with 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively. Morrish hit 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, bringing his three-point percentage over the last two games to 47 percent (9-of-19), and combined with sophomore Nate Stitchell (Coventry, R.I. / Coventry) to commit just one turnover while dishing out four assists apiece.
Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks will close out the 2013-14 season on Friday, Feb. 28 as they host Roberts Wesleyan College (10-13, 6-11) at 7:30 p.m.
