Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 ST. LEO, Fla. (Mar. 11, 2014) – Junior Megan Johnson (Gilbert, Ariz. / Phoenix College) extended her season-opening on-base streak to six games as the Mercy College softball team played a doubleheader at Saint Leo University on Tuesday night.
The Mavericks dropped both games to fall to 2-4 overall, while Saint Leo improves to 15-11.
Mercy 0 , Saint Leo 6
Freshman Jordyn Moquin (Southington, Conn. / Southington) kept a clean slate through the first three innings in her first collegiate start. Despite allowing runners to reach second and third in both the first and third innings, she managed to avoid surrendering a run and posted a 1-2-3 second inning, but the Mavericks offense was unable to get anything going.
Saint Leo capitalized on a pair of hit-by-pitches to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, eventually scoring four runs and adding a fifth in the next inning. Senior Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn. / New Fairfield) led off the top of the sixth with a single and Johnson later walked to put two runners on with one out, but a pair of groundouts ended the inning.
The Lions tacked on one final run in the bottom of the sixth inning and despite another leadoff single that led to runners on first and second with one out, the Mavericks again came up empty to end the game.
Johnson led the Mavericks with a 1-for-2 effort at the plate, adding a walk.
Mercy 0, Saint Leo 8 (6 inn.)
Mercy had a chance to get on the board right away in the first inning as junior Eryn Martinez (Moreno Valley, Calif. / Santa Ana CC) drew a leadoff walk and reached second on a Johnson single. Senior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) also drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, but Martinez was caught trying to sneak home during the next at-bat.
A leadoff walk came around to score against senior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J. / Parsippany) in the bottom of the frame, but the veteran settled down to get through the next two innings unscathed. The Mavericks were able to move junior Michelle Duford (Maple Ridge, B.C., Canada / Seward County CC) to second base on a sacrifice after she got aboard on an error to lead off the second inning, but were unable to capitalize.
Saint Leo blew the doors off with a six-run fourth inning, and it was not until the top of the sixth that Mercy came close to responding. A leadoff single by freshman Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa. / Henderson) was erased by a double play, and although the Mavericks were still able to load the bases on back-to-back singles and a walk, they could not push a run across the plate. The Lions then came up with the final run they needed to run-rule the game after six.
Bentson was the only Maverick to reach base twice on her own, going 1-for-2 with a walk. Freshman Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Catholic Central) threw 2 1/3 innings in relief, surrendering just one earned run.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will look to bounce back with games against Stonehill College (3-2) and Wilmington University (2-8) at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, March 12.
