Jaile Drives in Three as Baseball Faces University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (Mar. 13, 2014) – Senior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y. / Fordham Prep (NJIT) went 1-for-2 with three RBI and one run scored, while sophomore Steve Longo (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) went 3-for-5 with one run scored as the Mercy College Baseball team fell to the Mountain Cats of Pitt.-Johnstown, 14-6. The Mavericks fall to 3-4 overall, while the Mountain Cats improve to 4-9 overall.

The Mavericks got on the scoreboard first as Jaile hit a sacrifice fly to score Longo for a 1-0 lead going into the top of the second inning. The Mountain Cats would finally get going as they scored in the second, third and fourth innings to lead 13-1 after the top of the fourth.

Mercy's big inning came in the bottom of the fifth as freshman Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) reached on an error and freshman Dan Cleary (Smithtown, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) was hit by a pitch to put both on with no outs. Freshman Reed Farrier (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury) drew a pinch-hit walk, putting all the ducks on the pond with junior Anthony McQuade (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist (Chestnut Hill College) coming up to the plate. McQuade would double to left to score Grudzinski and Cleary, with Farrier advancing to third.

After a Mountain Cats pitching change, Jaile singled to left to bring Farrier and McQuade home. Senior Brendan Siegriest (Nanuet, N.Y. / Nanuet) also walked in a pinch-hit appearance, which advanced Jaile to second, and senior Andrew Kendel (Maywood, N.J. / Hackensack) made it three-for-three with a pinch-hit walk to load the bases. Sophomore George Layng (Warwick, N.Y. / Warwick (Rockland CC) would also pinch hit for junior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford), hitting a sacrifice fly to left field to score Jaile for the fifth run of the inning.

For Mercy, McQuade finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run score. Freshman Mark Medico (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) pitched 2 2/3 innings and struck out two while senior Adam Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y. / Monsignor Scanlan) pitched three innings, striking out three batters.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, Friday, Mar. 14, as they will take on the Skyhawks of Stonehill College in a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
