Baseball Takes Second Game of Doubleheader Against American International

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (Mar. 9, 2014) – The Mercy College baseball team split its Sunday doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets of American International College. The Mavericks fell in Game 1, 7-0, but took the victory in Game 2, 4-2. The Mavericks' overall record now stands at 3-1, while the Yellow Jackets are 4-1.

 

Game 1: American Int'l 7, Mercy 0

Sophomore Steve Longo (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) went 2-for-3 and junior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) went 1-for-2 as the Mavericks fell in the first game, 7-0.

Junior Kevin Rocco (Nanuet, N.Y. / Nanuet (Rockland CC) had the best outing on the mound.  He pitched two innings, striking out three while allowing just one hit.

 

Game 2: Mercy 4, American Int'l 2

Mercy fell behind 2-0, but battled back to tie the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. Freshman Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) and Longo both singled to get on base, and junior Anthony McQuade (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist (Chestnut Hill College)  would single to left to score Grudzinski, with sophomore transfer Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / Mamaroneck (SUNY Binghamton)  doubling to score Longo.

Mercy broke the tie in bottom of the sixth as they loaded the bases and Hasbrouck singled to first base to score junior Giovanni Lasalandra (Warwick, N.Y. / Warwick Valley) and senior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y. / Fordham Prep (NJIT) for a 4-2 lead.

Junior Blake Hasbrouck (Middletown, N.Y. / Middletown (Orange CC)  led the way for the Mavericks, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, while both McQuade and Hagan went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Freshman Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) earned in the victory, pitching six innings and striking out four, while sophomore Blake Coalla (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C Ketcham) picked up the save.

 

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, Monday, Mar. 10 to face the Warriors of Nyack College in a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 a.m.
