FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 1, 2014) – Senior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) and freshman Jordyn Moquin (Southington, Conn. / Southington) each hurled a complete game as the Mercy College softball team picked up an East Coast Conference victory at Queens College on Tuesday afternoon.

Mercy split the doubleheader to improve to 4-17 overall and 1-4 in the ECC while Queens is now 15-9 (3-3).

Mercy 3, Queens 1

The day started with an outright pitcher's duel.  The Mavericks had a runner reach base in each of the first three innings, while the Knights put runners on first and second with no outs in the second inning, but neither side would score.

Consecutive perfect frames in the bottom of the third and top of the fourth kept the slate clean, and although back-to-back errors allowed Queens to once again put runners on first and second base before the first out was recorded, Sieber came up big with a pair of swinging strikeouts to  come away unscathed.  Still, Queens would get onto the scoreboard first as a leadoff double and sacrifice led to the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Mercy responded immediately as senior Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y. / John F. Kennedy) got things started with a leadoff walk.  Junior Megan Johnson (Gilbert, Ariz. / Phoenix College) singled her way aboard with one out after the pinch runner was caught stealing, setting Couillard up to plate the tying and go-ahead runs with her two-run shot.  Back-to-back singles then put runners on first and second base for freshman Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J. / Middletown North) to double home senior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) and make it a 3-1 lead for the Mavericks.

Sieber finished the job amidst a series of defensive substitutions and pinch hitters in the sixth inning and a 1-2-3 seventh to earn the win.

Johnstone led the Mavericks at the plate with two hits in three at-bats while also drawing a walk.  Sieber struck out seven while allowing just four hits over the seven-inning complete game.

Mercy 0, Queens 2

Game Two was also a battle in the circle right from the start.  Queens would score the only runs needed in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a pair of errors as the Mavericks mustered only two hits.

Moquin tossed a gem for Mercy, striking out two without surrendering a single earned run over the six-inning complete game.  Bentson and junior Michelle Duford (Maple Ridge, B.C., Canada / Seward County CC) recorded the Mavericks' hits.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will head to Molloy College (7-9, 3-0) for another ECC doubleheader on Thursday, Apr. 3.
