The Pioneers actually led 1-0 as the Mavericks came to bat in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) reached first on an error and then made it to second on a botched throw. Senior Andrew Kendel (Maywood, N.J. / Hackensack) capitalized on the situation by singling to left to score Palumbo and tie the game at 1-1.
Mercy broke the tied in the bottom half of the fifth as senior Michael Dern (Roslyn, N.Y. / Valley Stream North) reached on an error by the shortstop and then moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip). After junior Giovanni Lasalandra singled to left, Mercy had runners on first and third base with senior Ken Post (Closter, N.J. / St. Joseph's Regional) coming to bat. Post grounded out to earn the RBI as Dern scored the go-ahead run to take the 2-1 lead. Junior Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Lakeland) added an insurance run in the sixth and scored by stealing home after doubling down the line to get on base.
