Wood Scores 100th Career Goal as Men's Lacrosse Travels to SNHU

(Apr. 22, 2014) – Junior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y. / Seton Catholic Central) scored his 100th career goal in a seven-point effort as the Mercy College men's lacrosse team played its final road game of the season at Southern New Hampshire University late Tuesday afternoon.
The Penmen rode a 3-0 second quarter to defend their home turf in a tight 12-11 victory, improving to 6-7 on the season, while Mercy is now 9-6 overall.
Wood got started early as he scored less than three minutes into the game. Sophomore Thomas Lackaye (Summit, N.J. / Summit) joined him on the scoresheet at the 5:02 mark to give Mercy the 2-0 lead, but SNHU won the ensuing faceoff and drove straight downfield to get on the board just 11 seconds later.
Graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y. / Univ. at Albany) matched the feat with a feed to Wood only 18 seconds later and the Mavericks would still hold a 3-2 lead after the first quarter following junior Jeremy Buckley's second goal of the day with just 36 seconds remaining.
Buckley completed the hat trick on a man-up opportunity to tie the game four minutes into the second quarter, and the Penmen went on to add two more tallies to lead 5-3 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, SNHU added two quick goals to make it six straight at the 13:12 and 11:23 marks in the third quarter, giving the Penmen a 7-3 advantage.
Mercy stormed back, however, with four unanswered goals to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter and Wood sent his squad ahead just over a minute into the final period.
Unfortunately for the Mavericks, the Penmen responded with three straight goals in less than two minutes to take the 10-8 lead, which they would not yield despite some late offensive heroics by Wood, sophomore Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and freshman Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg).
Wood tallied his seven points on four goals and three assists, bringing his season total back up to a Division II-leading 83 at 5.53 per game. Stockton finished with a brace, putting an efficient six of eight shots on target, while Glueckert won six ground balls and went 16-of-26 on faceoffs. Sophomore A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) tied his season high saves mark, stopping 12 shots for the third time this spring.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will look to reach double-digit wins as they close out the 2014 season playing hosts to Dominican College (1-11, 0-6) in an East Coast Conference bout on Saturday, Apr. 26 at 1 p.m.
