Box Score 2 BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2014) – Freshman Jordyn Moquin (Southington, Conn. / Southington) had a career day, including a three-run home run that proved to be the difference in Game One as the Mercy College softball team faced Dowling College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks split the doubleheader to improve to 11-30 overall and 7-17 in the ECC, while Dowling is now 22-21 (11-7).
Mercy 4, Dowling 2
After each pitcher sat down the opposing side in order in the first inning, the Mavericks jumped onto the board in the top of the second. An error with two outs extended the inning, allowing one run to score and setting up a three-run homer by Moquin for her first collegiate long ball.
Senior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) worked around a leadoff double in the bottom of the second inning and even came away unscathed after loading the bases with no outs in the third as she threw out the runner coming home for the first out and started a double play at the plate to get out of the inning.
Mercy had a chance to pad the lead in the top of the third as back-to-back singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with no outs, but a fielder's choice at the plate, popup and strikeout kept the margin at four.
Dowling was finally able to manufacture a run on a sacrifice fly following a triple in the bottom of the fifth innings and added another after a pair of leadoff singles in the bottom of the sixth, but the game was never in jeopardy as Mercy held on for the win.
Moquin was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk while junior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn. / Wolcott) also recorded two hits in four at-bats. Sieber picked up her sixth win in the complete game.
Mercy 10, Dowling 11
The nightcap was a barn-burner from the outset as both teams scored at least one run in each of the first three innings and would go on to score in an incredible 12 of 14 total frames.
Senior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) was hit by a pitch bring a run home with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, but Dowling bounced back with the tying run in the bottom of the inning.
A Moquin double brought another run home in the second inning and was followed by an RBI single by Couillard and two-RBI single by Bentson to give the Mavericks a 5-1 lead. The Golden Lions strung together back-to-back doubles to cut the deficit in half, but Mercy tacked another run on to double up Dowling in the third.
Once again, Dowling had a response, scoring three to tie the game after three innings and, after Mercy's lone goose egg in the top of the fourth, the Golden Lions took the lead on an error in the bottom of the frame.
Senior Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn. / New Fairfield) drove home the tying run in the top of the fifth inning, but Dowling regained the edge in the bottom of the fifth thanks to another error.
Finally, Bentson put Mercy back on top with a two-run shot in the top of the sixth, and freshman Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Catholic Central) got out of some trouble in relief to hold the lead heading into the seventh inning.
Moquin brought in an insurance run with another double in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Lions strung together a series of sharp singles to score the three runs necessary for the walk-off victory.
Wabshinak reached base four times, going 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs and one RBI while Couillard also recorded a three-hit day (3-for-4, two runs, one RBI). Bentson recorded an incredible five RBI as she went 2-for-3 with one run, while Moquin and freshman Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J. / Middletown North) each smacked two hits, with Moquin adding two RBI and a run and Gross scoring twice. Moquin also pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will host the University of Bridgeport (18-26, 11-15) in another ECC doubleheader tomorrow, Wednesday, Apr. 23 at 2:30 p.m.
