DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2014) – Senior Brendan Siegriest (Nanuet, N.Y. / Nanuet) went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Mercy College baseball team nearly pulled off a ninth-inning rally in heavy rain in a 6-4 loss to the Warriors of Nyack College.

The Warriors improve to 20-14 overall, while the Mavericks fall to 11-20 overall.

Freshman Mark Medico (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) surrendered just one unearned run over the first four innings before the Warriors took 4-0 lead and held it until the Mavericks came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Lakeland) led off the inning with a single to left field, then advanced to second on a groundout and moved to third on a balk. Siegriest got his first RBI of the afternoon as he singled to score Salvo and cut the Warriors led to 4-1.

The Warriors would answer with two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 6-1 lead. This put the pressure on Mercy to step up in the bottom of ninth. Sophomore Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / Mamaroneck [SUNY Binghamton]) and Salvo both singled to lead off the inning, putting runners on the corners. Senior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y. / Fordham Prep [NJIT]) then stepped up and singled through the left side to score Hagan, cutting the lead to 6-2.

After a pitching change, Nyack gained two outs on the double play and the Mavericks' backs were really against the wall. Jaile, who had advanced to second base on the previous force out at third, then scored as Siegriest doubled to center to cut the lead to 6-3. Senior Andrew Kendel (Maywood, N.J. / Hackensack) pinch hit for freshman Reed Farrier (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury) and hit an RBI single up the middle to score Siegriest from second to pull the game close at 6-4.

But the Mavericks magic would run out as the Warriors secured the third and final out of the game to pick up the win.

Jaile, Salvo and Hagan each went 2-for-4 while Medico lasted seven innings, striking out three.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, Apr. 23, as they host the Pioneers of LIU Post University in a makeup of the series finale from several weeks ago at 3:00 p.m.
