ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2014) – Graduate student Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn. / New Fairfield) recorded her 100th career hit as the Mercy College softball team used an offensive flurry to sweep a doubleheader against Nyack College at the Orangetown Little League Field on Thursday evening.

Mercy outscored Nyack 32-5 over the doubleheader to improve to 15-30 overall while Nyack falls to 3-33.

Wabshinak finished the day with an incredible 7-for-10 line, including a double, three runs, five RBI and two stolen bases while classmate Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y. / John F. Kennedy) added a 4-for-5 day with a walk, four runs, four RBI, one stolen base and a home run, including going a perfect 2-for-2 in Game One.  Freshman Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J. / Middletown North) chipped in with a 5-for-7 line, including a double, one walk, four runs and five RBI.

Mercy 16, Nyack 2 (5 inn.)

The Warriors started things off with a two-run first inning before the Mercy bats caught fire.  A four-run second inning gave the Mavericks the lead and they ran with it from there, tacking on two runs in the third, four more in the fourth and six in the fifth before the run rule went into effect.

Freshman Jordyn Moquin (Southington, Conn. / Southington) continued her torrid pace since becoming the full-time designated player last week, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a team-season-high six RBI.  Junior Megan Johnson (Gilbert, Ariz. / Phoenix College) was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, four runs and two RBI while fellow junior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn. / Wolcott) was 1-for-3 with a walk, one double, two runs and two RBI and classmate Michelle Duford (Maple Ridge, B.C., Canada / Seward County CC) finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.  Senior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) evened her record at 8-8 with the win, surrendering just one earned run on three hits while punching out five in the five-inning complete game.

Mercy 16, Nyack 3 (5 inn.)

Mercy got on the board to start Game Two as Gross pushed a run across after an error had extended the inning, but again Nyack rode a big bottom of the frame out to a lead, this time 3-1.  The Mavericks responded immediately with a four-run second inning and once again the floodgates were open, with Mercy adding five runs in each of the third and fourth innings and one final run in the fifth before the run rule brought the game to a close.

Sophomore Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J. / Sterling) was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI while senior Cristina Lisboa (Bronx, N.Y. / Saint Catherine Academy) went 2-for-3 a double and four runs.  Freshman Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa. / Henderson) chipped in with a 2-for-3 line, including two doubles, three runs and one RBI.  Senior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J. / Parsippany) earned the win after allowing three runs and striking out two over four innings in the start while senior Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz. / Bakersfield CC) struck out one in a scoreless inning in relief.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will get a one-day break before closing out the season with three doubleheaders in as many days, beginning with cross-river East Coast Conference rival St. Thomas Aquinas College (2-30, 1-21) on Saturday, Apr. 26 at 1 p.m.
