Baseball Plays Dowling Tight in Game One of Doubleheader

OAKDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2014) – Senior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y. / Fordham Prep [NJIT]) went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Mercy College baseball team played the East Coast Conference-leading Golden Lions of Dowling College tight in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Lions took both games to improve to 28-11 overall and 16-3 in the ECC, while the Mavericks fall to 12-22 and 8-11 in the ECC.
Game #1: Dowling 2, Mercy 1
Dowling scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 1-0 all the way through to the ninth inning. The Golden Lions picked up two quick outs before junior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) came to bat in the Mavericks' last chance.
Palumbo doubled down the left field line to keep the game alive for the Mavericks. Jaile stepped to the plate next and hit an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1 going into the bottom of inning. Dowling was able to recover to score the winning run and secure the victory.
Sophomore Christian Hock (Trumbull, Conn. / Notre Dame HS [Franklin Pierce Univ.]) pitched did not allow an earned run over eight innings in the start, while Palumbo, Jaile and senior Ken Post (Closter, N.J. / St. Joseph's Regional) each recorded two hits at the plate.
Game #2: Dowling 7, Mercy 1
The Mavericks' lone run came in the top of the third inning as senior Andrew Kendel (Maywood, N.J. / Hackensack) reached on an error and came around to score on an error following Post's single to centerfield.
Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 27, as they close out the four-game series against the Golden Lions at 12:00 p.m.
