POMONA, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2014)- Senior Ken Post (Closter, N.J. / St. Joseph's Regional) went 3-for-3 with one run scored as the Mercy College baseball team split a doubleheader with the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College. The Mavericks' record now stands at 9-11, and 6-3 in the East Coast Conference, while the Spartans' record now stands at 14-10 overall, and 6-4 in the ECC.

Game 1: STAC 7, Mercy 1

The Mavericks' lone run come in the top of the fifth, when junior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) hit an RBI double to left center to score fellow junior Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Lakeland), who had singled to get on base.

Game 2: Mercy 4, STAC 2

Game 2 proved to be a different story, as the Mavericks lit up the scoreboard first on a wild pitch to score junior Blake Hasbrouck (Middletown, N.Y. / Middletown [Orange CC]) to take a 1-0 lead in the top of third.  Mercy wasn't finished as its big inning came in the very next top half of the inning. After back-to-back singles by Post and sophomore Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / Mamaroneck [SUNY Binghamton], the Mavericks had runners on first and second with Salvo coming to the plate.

Salvo hit a two-RBI double to clear the bases, and then advanced to third on the throw for a 3-1 lead. The Mavericks added one more run in the top of inning, as senior Michael Dern (Roslyn, N.Y. / Valley Stream North) singled to score Salvo from third and push the lead to 4-0.

STAC attempted to play catch-up as they scored on a sacrifice fly, and bunt to cut the Mercy lead to 4-2, but shutdown pitching by junior Bryan Grieg (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) preserved the win for the Mavericks.

Salvo finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and one run scored, while Dern went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, as they will host the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College in a doubleheader that begins at 10:00 a.m.
