DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2014) – Senior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J. / Parsippany) tossed a combined five no-hit innings as the Mercy College softball team run-ruled East Coast Conference foe NYIT in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Mercy improves to 6-23 overall and 2-10 in the ECC while NYIT is now 8-14 (3-9).

Mercy 2, NYIT 4

Serrao retired the first six batters she faced and did not allow a hit over three innings pitched to start the game.  The Mavericks got on the scoreboard first as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and junior Eryn Martinez (Moreno Valley, Calif. / Rancho) scored on a groundout by junior Megan Johnson (Gilbert, Ariz. / Phoenix College)

Serrao exited the game after three innings and NYIT took advantage, blasting a three-run homer to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth.  Senior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) got one back for Mercy in the bottom of the frame, leading off with a single and reaching home on a double-steal, but the Bears added another run in the top of the sixth inning and held on for the 4-2 win.

Mercy 9, NYIT 1 (6 inn.)

Mercy opened the scoring in Game Two as well, with junior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn. / Wolcott) and Bentson driving in a run apiece to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning and senior Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn. / New Fairfield) doubling the margin with a two-run homer in the second inning.

NYIT pushed a run across the plate in the top of the third but Mercy responded with a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to lead 6-1.  Senior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) came on in relief of Serrao, who had tossed two innings of no-hit ball in relief herself, and sat down the side in order.

Wabshinak led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single and senior Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y. / John F. Kennedy) beat out the throw on what would have been a sacrifice bunt to send the potential winning run to the plate in Johnson.  The third baseman smashed a single through the left side to score Wabshinak, giving the Mavericks a 7-1 lead.  Johnstone advanced to third on a spectacular diving catch by the NYIT right fielder, and Bentson lined a single off the wall in right center, scoring Johnstone and moving Johnson to third.  Duford then stepped to the dish and slapped a single up the middle to plate Johnson and run-rule the game.

Wabshinak's 2-for-3 batting line with a walk, three runs and two RBI led the Mavericks while Bentson (2-for, one run, two RBI), Couillard (2-for-4, one RBI), Duford (2-for-4, one RBI) and Johnson (1-for-3, one walk, two runs, one RBI) each reached base twice.  Freshman Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Catholic Central) earned her first collegiate win, striking out three over three innings.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will head to NYIT tomorrow, Thursday, Apr. 10 for another doubleheader.
