DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 2, 2014) – The Mercy College baseball team staged a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning but came up short against the Lions of Molloy College, 9-3, in the East Coast Conference series opener on Friday afternoon.

The Lions improve to 18-20 overall and 11-10 in the ECC, while the Mavericks fall to 12-26 overall and 8-13 in the ECC.

The Lions led the whole game as Mercy came to bat in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) singled up the middle to get things started. After freshman Dan Cleary (Smithtown, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) reached on a walk, senior Ken Post (Closter, N.J. / St. Joseph's) singled to load the bases for sophomore Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / SUNY Binghamton). Hagan would hit a two-RBI singled to right field to score both Cleary and Grudzinski.

After Hagan advanced to third on a passed ball, senior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y. / NJIT) would get on via a fielding error that allowed Hagan to score from third. The Lions were able to get out of the inning to pick up the win.

For Mercy, junior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) went 1-for-3, hitting a stand-up triple in the bottom of the second. Grudzinski went 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Hagan finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, May 3, as they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to face the Lions in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
