Prando Heads Home Second Goal of Season as Men's Soccer Hosts AIC
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2014) – Sophomore Gonzalo Prando (Jefferson Valley, N.Y. / Lakeland) headed home the equalizer for his second goal in the opening three games of the season but two late goals saw the Mercy College men's soccer team fall, 3-1, against American International College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mavericks are now 0-3 to start the season while the Yellow Jackets move to 2-1.
Mercy controlled possession throughout the game, but AIC was able to play several dangerous through balls behind the defense and converted enough to make the difference.
Prando equalized in the 50th minute as he threw himself after a ball that was flicked back on a header by senior Jonathan Garcia (Falls Church, Va. / ASA Coll.) after senior Tafari Newman (Bronx, N.Y. / Evander Childs) played a rebound back into the box following his own long throw-in.
Mercy held a 20-9 edge in shots (8-5 on goal), and sophomore Kieran Moran (Bronx, N.Y. / Bloomfield Coll.) made two saves on point-blank chances, but the quality of AIC's shots were arguably better as all three goals came on clear chances, two from close range and one via a short free kick.
Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will look to topple powerhouse Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, N.H. on Saturday, Sept. 13. Both livestats and a video broadcast will be available through the men's soccer schedule page at MercyAthletics.com
