WALTHAM, Mass. (Sept. 11, 2014) – Senior Danielle Deeb (San Diego, Calif. /Miramar College) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 50th minute to give the Mercy College women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over the previously undefeated Falcons of Bentley University on Thursday afternoon.

The Mavericks improve to 3-1, while the Falcons fall to 2-1.

After taking the No. 5 team in the nation down to the wire on Tuesday, the Mavericks returned to the field to face another Northeast-10 opponent in Bentley on only one day's rest.

The Mavericks were the quicker team from the opponent whistle as the very first play saw senior Jessica Carrillo run onto a through ball over the top that put her one-on-one versus the goalkeeper, but the play was called back due to offside.

Mercy scored on the first shot taken, as junior Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz. /Paradise Valley CC) played a beautiful cross to freshman Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif. / South Hills) on the right side. Serna headed the ball toward the goal as she fell backward, lofting it over goalkeeper Deirdre Macrorie for the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.  The Mavericks would hold the 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, the Mavericks were looking for a little breathing room. Deeb gave them that breathing room, as she received the ball 30 yards out on the left side, ran at a defender and cut the ball back at the top of the 18-yard box before chipping Macrorie for the score.

The Falcons cut the lead in half as they scored in the 57th minute, but the Mavericks were able to hold on for the 2-1 victory.

Mercy outshot the Falcons, 10-8. Carrillo and Serna both took two shots, while DeLeon, senior Abby Zielinski (Lancaster, Pa. /George Mason Univ.) and sophomore Libby Zelikowitz (Middle Village, N.Y. / Francis Lewis)  took one shot each.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16, as they face the Tigers of Holy Family University at 3:00 p.m.
