Pair of 20-Kill Double-Double Performances Put White Over 100 Kills on Young Season as Volleyball Hosts Chestnut Hill, Assumption

(Sept. 13, 2014) – Senior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) posted a pair of 20-kill efforts to surpass 100 already on the young season as the Mercy College volleyball team split a tri-match with Chestnut Hill College and Assumption College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of the Griffins before playing the Greyhounds to a five-set thriller, falling 3-2.
White posted 22 kills on a .222 hitting percentage and 18 digs against the Griffins before tallying 23 kills and 10 digs in the day's finale to record her third consecutive 20-kill effort, as well as her fourth consecutive and fifth total double-double in just six matches this season.
Mercy 3, Chestnut Hill 0
The Mavericks stormed out to an 11-1 lead in the first set and cruised to the 25-10 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Another strong start in the second set saw Mercy lead 14-4 and weather a late rally to take the set, 25-18. The Griffins gave it everything they had early in the third set, but the Mavericks knotted things up at 14-14 and managed to take it in extra points, 28-26, to open the day with a victory.
White's 21 kills led the attack along with eight kills on a .292 hitting percentage from freshman Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth). Senior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) made 33 assists and added 10 digs to post her first double-double of the season, while sophomore Floriana Rraci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Walter Panas) had a career-high 25 digs as the libero. Senior Sonia Morales (San Fernando, Calif. / L.A. Mission Coll.) made six block assists and smacked five kills on just nine attacks.
Mercy 2, Assumption 3
The Mavericks fell behind 2-0 after dropping the first two sets by identical 25-21 score lines, but roared back with a 25-19 win in the third set and a dominant 25-15 fourth-set victory, including a 13-1 opening lead. Mercy forced the court change and held a 12-6 lead in the fifth set before Assumption rallied to score nine of the final 10 points to steal the victory.
White's 23 kills again paced the match, while Johnson contributed another 14 and Morales chipped in with eight more. Rraci led the squad with another 15 digs as Ronan made 48 assists and added three block assists. Junior Abi Foti (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) recorded 10 digs and smacked seven kills while freshman Destinee Simpson (Westhampton, N.J. / Rancocas Valley Regional) also had seven kills and added six block assists.
Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will host the College of Saint Rose on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
