Men's Soccer Trounces ECC Rival Molloy 3-0 in Conference Opener
Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2014) – The Mercy College men's soccer team opened conference play with a 3-0 victory at East Coast Conference rival Molloy College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks' veteran leadership came through in the victory, as all nine points were accrued by seniors. Jonathan Garcia (Falls Church, Va. / ASA Coll.) scored the opening and eventual game-winning goal on an assist from Danny Leon Jr. (Flushing, N.Y. / Benjamin Cardozo) and Ryan Flynn (Valley Stream, N.Y. / Valley Stream South) netted a late brace on assists from Andrew Levy (Bayside, N.Y. / Berkeley Coll.) and Tafari Newman (Bronx, N.Y. / Evander Childs) to seal the victory.
Mercy improves to 1-4 overall and starts ECC play 1-0 while Molloy drops to 0-4-1 (0-1).
Garcia scored on the first shot on goal of the game, getting his head onto Leon's corner kick for the 1-0 lead. The early edge was just what the Mavericks needed, as both teams played a very evenly contested match from that point forward.
Flynn took over in the final minutes, finally providing the Mavericks with some breathing room as he scored a pair of goals within just one minute and 30 seconds. He scored the first on a touch-over by Levy in the 84th minute and finished off a breakaway on a counter attack started by Newman just moments later. Sophomore Kieran Moran (Bronx, N.Y. / Bloomfield Coll.) saved a last-gasp effort by Molloy to preserve the shutout, over which he recorded three total saves.
Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will host Philadelphia University (2-3-1) on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4:00 p.m.
