Deeb Header Lifts Women's Soccer over Molloy in ECC Opener

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2014) – Senior Danielle Deeb (San Diego, Calif. /Miramar College)  connected on a header off a throw-in from junior Amanda McLean (Phoenix, Ariz. /Paradise Valley CC)  to give the Mercy College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the Lions of Molloy College in the East Coast Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the ECC, while the Lions fall to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the ECC.

The Mavericks dominated in the first half, as they outshot the Lions 10-1. The lone shot-on-goal for Molloy proved to be the only save junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston) was called on to make of the afternoon. The Mavericks kept up a relentless attack, but failed to put one in as the game remained scoreless at the half.

The second half proved to be the same as the first, as Mercy kept the ball in the Lions' end of the field. In the 77th minute, the Mavericks finally lit up the scoreboard as McLean launched her throw-in into the box, where Deeb headed it in for the eventual game-winner.

The Mavericks defense was on display as they allowed only two shots on the afternoon. Senior MacKenzie Cochrane (Mission Viejo, Calif. /Fresno State University), junior Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz. /Paradise Valley CC) and freshman Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif. / South Hills) all recorded three shots apiece. Augustine played all 90 minutes, making one save and notching her 12th career shutout and the third of the 2014 season.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 23, as the travel to Bloomfield, N.J. to face the Bears of Bloomfield College at 7:00 p.m.
