White Double-Doubles Lead Volleyball in Tri-Match with NYIT, Caldwell

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2014) – Senior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) recorded another pair of double-doubles as the Mercy College volleyball team played a tri-match against East Coast Conference foe NYIT and Caldwell College on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks are now 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the ECC, while NYIT improves to 8-4 (3-0) and Caldwell drops to 5-5.

 

Mercy 2, NYIT 3

The Mavericks came out firing in the first set against the hosts, smashing 15 kills on a team .308 hitting percentage to narrowly edge out the Bears, 25-23, for the 1-0 lead.  NYIT bounced back with a 25-17 victory in the second set, but Mercy came within one set of clinching the match with a 25-20 third-set win.

Unfortunately for Mercy, NYIT came up in the clutch to post its two best hitting percentages of the match to claim the five-set victory.

White notched her fourth 20-kill performance of the season with a 24-kill effort and completed her seventh double-double of the year with a season-high-tying 18 digs.  Senior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) also notched her third double-double this year with her second 40-assist effort (43) of the season and a season-high 11 digs.  Freshman Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth) chipped in with 12 kills against just three errors while sophomores Floriana Rraci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Walter Panas) and Niccole Soriano (Elizabeth, N.J. / Thomas A. Edison) recorded 14 and 11 digs, respectively.

 

Mercy 0, Caldwell 3

The Mavericks could not get going in the nightcap versus Caldwell, falling in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-20.  White led the attack with 14 kills and recorded her eighth double-double in 10 matches this season with 10 digs.  Rraci and junior Abi Foti (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) each made 13 digs.

 

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will host Tappan Zee Bridge rival Nyack College on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
