DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2014) – Seniors Chuong Tran (West Nyack, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) and Mubarak Sani (Bronx, N.Y. / Borough of Manhattan CC) impressed as the Mercy College men's soccer team hosted East Coast Conference rival the University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Knights mustered a 3-0 victory to improve to 3-3-0 overall and 2-1 in the ECC, while the Mavericks dip to 1-6 (1-1).

The rivals traded blows early as each side had its chances, but Bridgeport would get on the board first in the 29th minute as Simon Haakansson split the defense for an open look on goal, which he converted.  Mercy pushed hard for an equalizer as the first half wound down, and although Bridgeport would increase the margin with strikes in the 60th and 69th minutes, the Mavericks kept up the attack all game.

Tran and Sani in particular provided an excellent link between the defense and attack as Tran also managed to put two decent chances on target, while senior Danny Leon Jr. (Flushing, N.Y. / Benjamin Cardozo) ripped a trio of swerving volleys that all had the keeper beat, but went just high.  Sophomore Luis Lizarzaburu (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) made two saves in goal.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will take another brief break from conference play as they face Dominican College (3-3) on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
