Carrillo Scores Two as Women's Soccer Knocks Off Defending ECC Champions No. 18 Bridgeport, 2-1

(Sept. 27, 2014) – Senior Jessica Carrillo (San Diego, Calif./Miramar College) scored her first two goals of the season as the Mercy College women's soccer team knocked off defending East Coast Conference champion No. 18 the University of Bridgeport, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECC, while the Purple Knights fall to 5-1-1 (2-1).
A beautiful late September afternoon set the stage for a rematch of the 2013 ECC Championship Final. The rivals played a tight game over the first 25 minutes, but that changed in the 28th minute as Mercy earned a free kick. Senior Abby Zielinski (Lancaster, Pa./George Mason Univ.) stood over the ball, but then a made quick side pass to Carrillo, who turned and ripped a shot from 25 yards out past Bridgeport goalkeeper Kaitlin Occhipinti for a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks added to their lead as senior Ashley Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) played a through ball to Carrillo for a breakaway nine minutes later. Carrillo went one-on-one with Occhipinti and tipped the ball past her for a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute. Mercy held the 2-0 lead through halftime.
In the second half, the Purple Knights turned up the intensity as just two minutes in, Bridgeport's Amanda Moura got off a header which was knocked off the line by sophomore Samantha Longo (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside).
Junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) did her fair share of movement in the box, making a diving save in the 54th minute, knocking down Bridgeport's Gillian Munro in the process. The Purple Knights would get on the scoresheet via a close-range bicycle kick in the 90th minute, but Mercy held on for the statement victory.
For Mercy, Carrillo scored two goals on only five total shots on goal. Augustine made four saves in 90 minutes of work.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to action on Friday, Oct. 3, as they travel to Amherst, N.Y. to face the Wildcats of Daemen College at 4:30 p.m.
