Grandprez Scores and Assists as Field Hockey Faces Newberry
Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. (Sept. 26, 2014)- Freshman Geraldine Grandprez (Wanze, Belgium /IHECS Bruxelles) scored and assisted on the first goals of her Mavericks career as the Mercy College field hockey team faced the Wolves of Newberry College on Friday afternoon.
The Wolves came away with the 4-2 victory, and improve to 2-5 overall, while the Mavericks fall to 0-6 overall.
Two early goals by the Wolves' Caitlyn Warren gave Newberry a 2-0 lead just seven minutes in. Grandprez would cut the lead in half, as she scored an unassisted goal in the 28th minute.
The Wolves would maintain their 2-1 lead into the break.
In the second, Newberry responded with two unanswered goals to take the 4-1 lead in the 58th minute. Grandprez would assist on a tap-in goal by sophomore Vanessa Soler (Port Monmouth, N.J. / Middletown North) in the 67th minute to cut the lead to 4-2, but the goal came too late, as Newberry held on for the win.
For Mercy, freshman Olivia Kelly (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) made nine saves in 70 minutes of work.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, Sept. 27, as they will travel to Gaffney, S.C. to face the Saints of Limestone College at 11:00 a.m.
