ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2014)- Senior Tafari Newman (Bronx, N.Y. / Meadowbrook) scored off an assist from senior Roberto Dashi (Nyack, N.Y. / Clarkstown South), as the Mercy College men's soccer team faced the Chargers of Dominican College in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers won the game, 2-1, in overtime and improved to 5-3 overall, while the Mavericks fell to 1-7 overall.

A struggle ensued in the early moments of the game, as Dominican and Mercy went back and forth. The Mavericks lit up the scoreboard first, as Newman scored off an assist from Dashi in the 22nd minute to take a lead 1-0.

The Chargers tied the game up at 1-1 just before the half, as Fernando Gonzalez scored from just six yards out, off a Calogero Curcuru assist.

In the second half, defense was the name of the game for the Mavericks as sophomore Luis Lizarzaburu (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) made six of his nine saves in the latter 45. The game remained tied 1-1, as both teams needed an extra 10 minutes to decide the outcome.

The Chargers scored the game-winner in the 98th minute, as Christopher Walsh fired a shot from 20 yards out to lift the Chargers to a 2-1 victory.

Head Chris Smith and the Mavericks return to action on Friday Oct. 3, as they will travel to Amherst, N.Y. to face the Wildcats of Daemen College at 7:30 p.m.
