GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2014) – The Mercy College men's soccer team closed out the opening weekend of the season against Southern Connecticut State University in the Adelphi Alumni Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks hung tight early on but eventually fell, 4-1, and are now 0-2-0 to start the season, while SCSU improved to 2-0-0.

The Owls unleashed an early barrage on junior Luis Lizarzaburu (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) in goal, but it took until the 35th minute for them to finally get on the board.  Senior Ryan Flynn (Valley Stream, N.Y. / Valley Stream South) nearly leveled the match just before halftime as he forced a save from Noah Veronier, but Mercy trailed 1-0 at the break.

The Mavericks did pull even in the 54th minute, however, as Sebastian Brems came under pressure and attempted to head the ball back to Veronier, but missed his mark and sent the ball into the net.

Unfortunately for Mercy, SCSU was able to slot home three chances in the final 23 minutes to take the match.  Lizarzaburu managed to keep out three shots while Flynn and senior Juan Carlos Murgueitio (Jackson Heights, N.Y. / Arts & Business) provided the offensive spark for Mercy, as each put one shot on target.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will look to bounce back in their home opener versus American International College (1-0-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4:00 p.m.
