LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Sept. 6, 2014) – Senior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) smacked 28 kills over the first seven sets of the season as the Mercy College volleyball team opened its 2014 campaign at the Georgian Court Tournament on Saturday morning.

White is now just 25 kills shy of the program record for career kills (1,654), which was set by Debra Waite in 1995.

The Mavericks took on a pair of Northeast-10 opponents in Franklin Pierce University and Southern New Hampshire University.  Mercy fell to both by scores of 3-1 and 3-0.

The Mavericks stormed out to a 25-15 first set victory, but dropped the final three despite a 17-kill, 12-dig double-double from White and 10 kills by freshman Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth) in her collegiate debut.  Senior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) made 27 assists while sophomore Floriana Rraci (Cortlandt, N.Y. / Walter Panas) managed nine digs and sophomore Niccole Soriano (Elizabeth, N.J. / Thomas A. Edison) served up four aces.

Mercy was unlucky to drop a tightly contested first set to the Penmen, 25-22, despite a match-best .522 hitting percentage.  White added 11 kills to her daily tally while Rraci led the squad with another nine digs and Ronan assisted on 16 points.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will look to bounce back tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 7 as they take on the host Lions at 4:00 p.m.
