Roberts Pours in 24 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2015)- Senior Brandone Roberts (Jessup, Md. /Nyack College) finished with 24 points and nine rebounds as the Mercy College women's basketball team fell to the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College, 80-75.
The Redhawks improve to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the East Coast Conference, while the Mavericks fall to 7-7 overall and 1-6 in the ECC.
Roberts scored the first six Maverick points, erasing an early 9-2 deficit, to pull within three at 9-6. That would be the closest the Mavericks would get in the first half, as Roberts Wesleyan kept Mercy at bay from the free-throw line.
The Mavericks had 13 foul called against them, as the Redhawks went to the line 21 times in the first stanza. Wesleyan connected on 18 free throws to balloon their lead to 50-33 as time expired in the first half.
Marissa Sell, Lucy Covley, and Samantha Courtney went 17-18 from the charity stripe as the Redhawks posted an 85.7% free-throw percentage. Despite the Mavericks trailing at the break, Roberts led all scorers with 14 points.
In the second half, Mercy came out with something to prove. The Mavericks put together a 17-0 run in the opening five minutes of the second half, allowing them to take their first lead of the game at 50-49.
The Redhawks didn't convert on a field goal until Necedah James made a layup at the 13:50 mark to reclaim the lead.
Mercy responded with back-to-back layups by junior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT), taking their largest lead of the game at 58-53.
Wesleyan answered back one more time, using an 8-1 run to take a 61-59 lead with 8:25 remaining.
The Redhawks pulled away late as they nailed four triples, including three in a row to spark an 11-2 run that sealed the game for Wesleyan.
Despite the loss, the Mavericks outscored the Redhawks, shot 46.2% from the field and evened foul situation in the latter 45. Mercy went 12-for-16 from the free throw in the second half. Senior Tanayzha Augustine (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. /Poughkeepsie) led all scorers in the second half with 12 points and finished the game with 14 points.
Junior Erin Copeland (Kansas City, Kan. /Univ. of Illinois-Springfield) had a solid evening, finishing with eight assists, eight rebounds, and six points, while junior Tatiana Parish (Los Angeles, Calif./ Mt. San Antonio) finished with eight points, four assists and two steals.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, Saturday Jan. 17th, as they host the Wildcats of Daemen College at 12:30 p.m.
