Goodson Grabs Season-High 15 Rebounds as Women's Basketball Hosts Bridgeport

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2015)- Junior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y. /SUNYIT) grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds and added nine points, as the Mercy College women's basketball team fell to the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport, 56-47 on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Knights improve to 4-16 overall and 2-10 in the East Coast Conference, while the Mavericks fall 7-12 overall and 1-11 in the ECC.

Junior Tatiana Parish (Los Angeles, Calif. /Mt. San Antonio CC) paced the Mavericks with eight points and five rebounds in the first half. Parish grabbed two offensive boards, including following her own miss to tie the game up at 15-15 with 10:21 remaining.

Tiara Aziz didn't start for the Purple Knights, but subbed into the game at the 12:51 mark of the first half. Aziz broke the game open by scoring nine straight points during an 11-0 run, that give Bridgeport it's largest lead of the game at 26-15 with just under seven minutes to play.

Seniors Brandone Roberts (Jessup, Md. /Nyack College) and Riana Ward (Bronx, N.Y. / Erie CC) both made lay-ups to pull the Mavericks to within four at 31-27 with 02:12 remaining, before Aziz made back-to-back layups to end the half at 35-27. Aziz led all scorers with 16 points in only 13 minutes.

The Mavericks opened the second stanza on a 4-0 run, as junior Erin Copeland (Kansas City, Kan. / Univ. of Illinois-Springfield) found Roberts for an easy two and Goodson on the wing for the triple. Mercy pulled to within three at 35-32 with 17:14 remaining. The Purple Knights struggled to score early in the second half, as they didn't connect on a field goal until 10:35 mark.

Despite the scoring drought early, the Purple Knights made back-to-back triples to extend their lead to 43-34 with 09:11 remaining. Mercy responded with a 7-2 run that was capped off on a lay-up by Ward, to draw the Mavericks to within two at 49-47 with 02:12 remaining.

The Purple Knights sealed the game with a triple from Jennifer Kucukkaya with 01:49 remaining, that closed out the game on a 7-0 run.

Augustine finished with seven points and eight rebounds, while the Roberts finished with nine points, four rebounds and three blocks. Copeland added six rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 4th, as they will host the Lions of Molloy College at 5:30 p.m.
