SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 12, 2015) – Despite seven saves from senior goalkeeper Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), the Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to American International College in non-conference action on Monday afternoon at Abdow Field.

The Mavericks (5-4-2) see their three-game unbeaten streak come to an end, while the Yellow Jackets (8-4) win their fifth straight contest.

Sophomore Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) finished the game with a team-high two shots on goal, while sophomore Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) and freshman Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) recorded Mercy's two other shots on goal.

Johanna Nilsson scored the lone goal of the game in the 71st minute to help lead American International. Goalkeeper Rachel Edgin made four saves to earn the victory.

The Mavericks stepped out of ECC play and was faced with a tall task in taking on a Yellow Jackets squad that came in on a four-game winning streak.

Mercy came out energized to start the contest as Noble fired the first shot of the game less than a minute in. Noble and Serna followed with a pair of shots in the 7th minute that forced Edgin to make a pair of saves, but the game remained scoreless.

Following the first save of the day by Augustine in the 13th minute, Iannuzzi came back with a header shot in the 15th minute that forced Edgin to make another stop.

The Mavericks ended the frame with a 7-5 edge in shots and forced Edgin to make all four of her saves in the first half. Augustine made three saves of her own and the teams headed into halftime scoreless.

The second half saw American International reverse the action as they controlled play in the second half, holding a 7-2 advantage in shots in the period.

Augustine made two more saves in the game to keep the Yellow Jackets scoreless, but the home team finally got on the board in the 71st minute as Nilsson finished off a free kick from the 40-yard line that was played into the box by Romina Bell, making it 1-0.

Mercy responded with a shot immediately after the goal and in the 88th minute but could not find the back of the net and American International came away with the victory.

The Yellow Jackets ended up outshooting the Mavericks 12-9 on the day and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks will resume ECC play as they travel to LIU Post on Saturday, October 17th for a 12 p.m. start time.
