Olson Puts Down Match-High 11 Kills as Volleyball Hosts LIU Post

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2015) – Despite a match-high 11 kills from freshman Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany), the Mercy College volleyball dropped a 3-0 (11-25, 21-25, 17-25) decision to East Coast Conference (ECC) foe LIU Post on Thursday night at Mercy Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (5-17, 1-6 ECC) fail to duplicate the win from their last home match, while the Pioneers (17-5, 5-2 ECC) have won three in a row.

Olson added five digs, while freshman Toni Parente (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) contributed a match-high-tying ten digs. Freshman Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) dished out 12 assists and had five digs and freshman Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) finished with nine digs.

LIU Post was led by Monica Amador and Taryn McCullouch who each had a team-high nine kills.

The opening set of the match saw the teams tied at 5-5 early on before the Pioneers responded with five unanswered to build a 10-5 lead and they did not look back in cruising to a 1-0 lead.

The visitors got off to a 13-8 start in the second set and looked to be headed to an easy win. However, the Mavericks did not go down without a fight as they answered with five straight to even the score up at 13-13. The action continued to go back-and-forth with the score being 19-19 late in the frame. LIU Post followed with a 6-2 run to close out the set and build a 2-0 advantage.

In the final set of the match, the Pioneers jumped out to a 9-4 lead before upping the lead to six, 16-10. Mercy came back with a 7-2 spurt to get within one, 18-17, looking to extend the match. However, LIU Post closed out the match with seven straight points to go home victorious.

The Mavericks ended the match hitting .041, while the Pioneers hit an efficient .262 as a team. Mercy finished with 26 kills and 44 digs on the night compared to 41 kills and 45 digs for LIU Post.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will resume play on Saturday, October 17th as they head to NYIT for a tri-match beginning at 11 a.m.
